Inspirational Story of a Daughter: Once upon a time in a small town in Italy there was a businessman. He owed a large sum of debt to an ugly old man. Taking benefit of the opportunity, the unpleasant old man was looking forward to marry the businessman’s daughter. The daughter was so beautiful, that the old man started to fancy her.
The old man presented businessman a deal. The deal was to wipe out all the debt he owed him, but only if the old man could marry businessman’s daughter. Visibly the proposal was disgusting, but the amount businessman owed was almost impossible to assemble.
The ugly old man came up with a plan and told the businessman that he would place two pebbles into a bag, one white and one black and the daughter would have to pick one pebble out of the bag. The catch was – “The daughter will have to reach into the bag to pick up a pebble. If the she takes out the black one, the debt will be wiped out but the daughter will have to marry the old man. If she takes out the white one, the debt will be wiped out and the daughter would not have to marry the old man.”
The old man reached the businessman’s garden and bent over to pick up two pebbles. While he was picking up the pebbles to execute his disgusting plan, the daughter noticed that he picked up two black pebbles intentionally and is conspiring something.
The old man asked the daughter (in front of businessman) to reach the bag and take out a pebble. Ultimately the daughter had three choices:
Reject the deal by refusing to pick a pebble and leave her father in a miserable condition.
Take out both the pebbles and expose the old man for cheating.
Pick a pebble from the bag and marry the old man and sacrifice everything.
The daughter took the other way and picked up a pebble and without looking it, she asked the old man – “While you yourself picked up one black and one white pebble. If you look into the bag for the pebble that is left inside, you will obviously come to know which pebble I picked.”
The pebble left in the bag was obviously black and the old man who didn’t want to be exposed, had to act as if the pebble that is in the daughter’s hand is white. That is how the out of the box thinking helped out the daughter in clearing her father’s debt without sacrificing herself.
Moral: It is always possible to overcome a problem with the ‘out of the box thinking’ and ‘not giving up’ to the only option that is left. Never give up and try to find the solution, even if both the pebbles are black.
