Why Sitting too Much is Harmful for Your Health? According to an opening study by UCLA researchers of older adults and middle-aged, sitting too much may become one of the major reasons of changes in a part of the brain that critically deals with memory.
Why Sitting too Much is Harmful for Your Health?
Studies show that too much sitting, like smoking, increases the risk of premature death heart disease and diabetes. Researchers wanted to see how inactive behavior influences our brain health, particularly regions of the brain that are significantly related to memory configuration.
UCLA researchers recruited 35 people ages 45 to 75 and asked about their physical activity levels and the average number of hours per day they used up sitting over the prior week. Each person had a high-resolution MRI scan, which provides an elaborated glance at the MTL (Medial temporal lobe),i.e., a brain region responsible in the formation of new memories.
The researchers found that sedentary performance is an important forecaster of thinning of the Medial temporal lobe (MTL) and that physical activity, even at elevated levels, is deficient to offset the damaging effects of sitting for comprehensive periods.
This study does not prove that too much sitting causes thinner brain structures, but instead that more hours spent sitting are linked with thinner regions, researchers said. In accumulation, the researchers paying attention on the hours spent sitting, but did not ask participants if they took breaks during this time.
The researchers’ next wish to follow a cluster of people for a longer period to determine if sitting causes the thinning and what role gender, race, and weight might play in brain health connected to sitting.
MTL thinning can be a forerunner to cognitive refuse and dementia in middle-aged and older adults. Reducing inactive behavior may be a possible target for intervention intended to get better brain health in people at risk for Alzheimer’s illness, researchers said.
